# Decision trees

> Show choices, chances and results on one page.

When a decision hinges on a few distinct events ("does the competitor enter?", "does the pilot succeed?"), a **decision tree** shows branches with their chances and payoffs.

## Two ways to use one

* **As the model itself:** start from the *Simple decision tree* template.
* **Generated from the diagram:** the tree is built from your influence diagram, never typed by hand, so the two always agree. The events suggested are taken from the top of the value-of-information and tornado rankings.

For large, smooth models the tool shows a **policy table** instead: the best option in each main scenario.

## Do you need a tree?

The **Decision tree** analyst tool recommends whether your decision needs one.

## Limits

Staged decisions (pilot first, then decide) are only possible in a tree that is itself the model. A tree generated from a diagram has one decision, taken at the start.
