# Research sources

> Web search, internal data, experts and the knowledge base, and the rules research follows.

Research starts where the question comes up: next to an estimate, an arrow or the options list.

## The four sources

| Source | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Web search** | Frames a focused question and records what each source reports, with population and limits |
| **Internal data** | Read-only SQL against a connected source, with a table browser |
| **Subject-matter experts** | Asks named people for low, likely and high, and pools them, giving more weight to people whose past ranges proved accurate |
| **Knowledge base** | Searches workspace notes, policies, post-incident reviews and other decisions |

## Three rules

1. **Nothing is invented.** Figures are quoted from the source, never made up.
2. **Outside evidence never makes you more certain than you were.** A study of a different company may shift your middle value or widen your range, but not narrow it. How much of someone else's result applies to you is an explicit, editable number (50% by default).
3. **No evidence means no number.** "Nothing found" never becomes zero.

## Proposals and the evidence register

Research only produces a **proposal**. Nothing changes until the owner accepts, edits or rejects it. Every source is kept in an **evidence register**.
