When a decision hinges on a few distinct events (“does the competitor enter?”, “does the pilot succeed?”), a decision tree shows branches with their chances and payoffs.

Two ways to use one

  • As the model itself: start from the Simple decision tree template.
  • Generated from the diagram: the tree is built from your influence diagram, never typed by hand, so the two always agree. The events suggested are taken from the top of the value-of-information and tornado rankings.
For large, smooth models the tool shows a policy table instead: the best option in each main scenario.

Do you need a tree?

The Decision tree analyst tool recommends whether your decision needs one.

Limits

Staged decisions (pilot first, then decide) are only possible in a tree that is itself the model. A tree generated from a diagram has one decision, taken at the start.
